Childrens Booklets
The National Schizophrenia Fellowship (Scotland), produced a series of important booklets aimed at addressing the needs of young people who live in families where an adult has a mental illness.
It can be very distressing for a young person to understand or try to explain to others why an adult in their family behaves in certain ways and they may suffer stigma at the hands of others as a result.
The booklets represent the first ever practical attempt to address the needs of young people in this situation. All three booklets are designed either to be read by family members or used as a communication tool by professionals who work with families.
Tailored to the reading age of their target audience, the booklets for children and young people include an explanation of what mental illness is, what other common mental health terms mean and how mental illness can affect people. The booklet for parents provides advice and guidance on how to tell children in their family about their mental illness and how to manage their childs response. All three booklets focus on the importance of open and honest communications in promoting understanding and combating stigma.
The booklets were recently reprinted and are available direct from NSF (Scotland). You can call on 0131 662 4359 or order them from this website.
